How To: Remove Leftover Wax

The next time one of your soy or beeswax candles burns out, don’t just throw it in the trash. You can recycle the leftover wax by melting it down and turning it into an entirely new candle, or wax melts. Or, if you’ve decided to throw out all your paraffin wax candles, maybe after reading why I threw away all my candles, you can still keep the cute containers they came in to either repurpose, or use them to make your own homemade non toxic candles. You can learn how to make my favorite homemade lemon+lavender candles HERE, I have these all over my home!

What You’ll Need

  • wax paper or newspaper
  • sink or bowl
  • used candle
  • butter knife

Instructions

  1. Fill sink or bowl up with hot water. The water needs to be high enough to cover most of the container.
  2. Place used candle in sink or bowl for a few minutes.
  3. To protect your workspace, lay down wax paper or newspaper. Once the wax starts to soften up, use the butter knife to push the wax away from the sides of the container. With the knife, slice, wiggle, and pull the wax out of the container onto the wax paper.
  4. Turn container upside down to remove the remaining wax and wick holder. If it’s a store bought candle, throw the wax away. If it is a soy or beeswax candle, save the wax and use it to make a brand new candle.
  5. With a warm wet paper towel, wipe any wax residue still left on the inside of the jar.
  6. Wash container with soap and water, but only after removing the majority of the wax from the container. You don’t want your drain getting clogged!
  7. Reuse the jar for anything you like!
